Pink Umbrella Installation Near the Central Post Office in Plovdiv
The pink umbrella installation displayed near the Central Post Office, alongside the Northern Roman Forum, was created by Fernet Bulgaria. Deputy Mayor for Culture Plamen Panov explained that the installation is an original way of promoting one of the most spectacular events to take place in Plovdiv this year – Giro d’Italia, which begins on 10 May 2026. The umbrellas are in a cyclamen pink shade, the iconic and instantly recognisable colour that symbolizes the leader in the general classification. According to Panov, more similar “pink interventions” will appear throughout the city, designed to attract the attention of Plovdiv residents and cycling fans alike. During this year’s edition, the entire route will be decorated thematically, while host cities – including Plovdiv – will compete in the originality of their pink decorations. The symbolism of the colour brings together history, culture and outstanding sporting achievement, reflecting the legacy and prestige of one of the most demanding races in the world. The Giro d’Italia is the second-largest and one of the most prestigious cycling races in the world. The 109th edition of the race will begin on 8 May 2026 in Nessebar and will pass through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv. Plovdiv will welcome the race with a special festive programme, culminating in the concert “The Great Bulgarian Rock Voices” at the Ancient Theatre at 12:30 pm on 10 May. The event will bring together the musicians of the band Fondatsiyata – Doni, Ivan Lechev, Slavcho Nikolov, and Venko Poromanski. Special guest appearances will also include some of the most recognisable voices on the Bulgarian rock scene – Zvezdi from Ahat, Nasko from B.T.R., Valdi Totev of “The Last Cricket,” as well as X Factor winner Slavin Slavchev. Admission to the event is free, subject to venue capacity. The tradition of pink dates back to 1931 and was inspired by the pages of the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which is printed on pink paper. Since then, the Maglia Rosa (the pink jersey) has become one of the most coveted prizes in professional cycling, turning every stage of the race into a true celebration for cycling fans.
